What to Do After a Car Accident at Work
If you've just been in a car accident while working, follow these steps to protect your health AND your legal rights:
At the Scene
- Call 911 - Get police and medical help, even if you think you're okay
- Document everything - Photos of vehicles, road conditions, injuries, license plates
- Get witness information - Names and phone numbers of anyone who saw the crash
- Don't admit fault - Be polite but don't apologize or accept blame
- Get the police report number
Within 24 Hours
- Report to your employer - Tell them about the accident in writing
- Seek medical attention - Even if you feel fine, get checked out
- Save all documents - Medical records, receipts, correspondence
Within the First Week
- Call a lawyer - Before giving recorded statements to any insurance company
- Don't sign anything - From your employer's insurance or the other driver's insurance
- Follow medical advice - Go to all appointments, follow treatment plans
What NOT to Do
- Don't give recorded statements without a lawyer
- Don't post about the accident on social media
- Don't accept quick settlement offers
- Don't wait to get medical treatment
